In 2020, Clément Combier joined the Computer Science Bachelor's degree, Digital Pathway for Connected Environments, at UPPA (Anglet). He then pursued a Master's degree in Information Systems for Industrial Logistics Engineering and Services (SIGLIS) through a work-study program. In 2024, he began a PhD at UPPA's Computer Science Laboratory.

A few words about this path that is gradually leading you to research?

I have always been passionate about science and computer science. It was only natural for me to head in that direction after high school. Originally from Bayonne, I started by looking at nearby training programs and found the Computer Science Bachelor's, Digital Pathway for Connected Environments at UPPA, taught on the Montaury campus in Anglet. I couldn’t find anything closer. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, but I was already drawn to research. Getting into university was a good start. I then chose a Master's program recommended by teachers – the SIGLIS Master's – in continuity with the Bachelor's, with a focus on logistics and practical applications. I completed this Master's through a work-study program: the first year at Epidaure 64, a company specializing in luxury leather goods where I had already done a six-month internship during my third year, and the second year at UPPA's Computer Science Laboratory (LIUPPA). At Epidaure 64, I worked on digitizing the supply chain. At LIUPPA, I participated in a research program on meta-organizations. This final year confirmed my interest in research and my decision to pursue a PhD.

You started your PhD in 2024, what is your research topic?

At the end of my second Master's year, LIUPPA offered me the opportunity to continue my research. I submitted a research topic within the framework of UNITA, a European alliance bringing together twelve universities including UPPA. The goal is to create tools to assess and measure the societal, environmental, and economic impact of meta-organizations within the UNITA alliance. The approach is based on artificial intelligence, mathematical prediction models, data analysis, and modeling. I also received joint supervision from the University of Navarre, so I will have the opportunity to spend nine months in Spain in 2026, giving me a dual perspective.

How do you see your professional future?

I see two options: the first is to become a teacher-researcher, and the second is to apply my skills externally with companies. For now, I haven't made a decision yet—both paths interest me, especially since I’ve been self-employed since the start of my studies in 2019. I carry out various tasks: website design, IT maintenance support, software development… UPPA, to my surprise, provides significant resources to help students pursue entrepreneurship. The doctoral school encourages entrepreneurial thinking and planning for “life after the PhD.”

Two or three words that you spontaneously associate with UPPA?

Closeness to the region and its socio-economic actors – The openness of the university, the opportunities for mobility and involvement in campus associations – The human scale of the Montaury campus and its pleasant study environment.

A piece of advice for students?

First, I would tell them not to worry about their career path. If they are passionate about computer science, they will find their way. The field is vast—ranging from cybersecurity to software design and data science—but it takes a few years to really figure out which area you want to specialize in and work in. I’d also advise them to take an interest in campus life, get involved in student associations, and make the most of these university years, which are a great time for meeting people. Computer science is fascinating, but you also need to know how to step away from the screen.
